I've worked in the OilPatch in the Past...and found that just showing up @ jobsites will get You hired! It shows You're Serious & Ready-To-Go!
Make sure You've got Steel-Toed Boots ( Both Insulated & Non-Insulated ), and a Variey of Clothing so that You can dress in Layers...Then You're ready for All-Conditions from Warm to Cold...Raingear is another Necessity!
Calgary, Red Deer, Edmonton, Nisku, Grand Prairie, Fort McMurray, etc. are All Excellent Locations to Just Show Up...Grab the Yellow Page Directories...And, Start making calls!...Shouldn't take long to find a Job!

Both of these answers are a great start! Right now you'd get a lot of work if you went to Fort McMurray or Grand Prarie. Right now there are so many jobs in that field, and not enough people to fill them. Many companies are giving sign on bonuses just to get labor. A friend of mine moved there and received a $70,000 as long as he stayed with the company. So not only did he get the bonus, he was also getting paid like any person who goes to work everyday. Bonus money is freebie money.
Good luck.
