I'm using a Toshiba Satellite A105-S1014 and I just added 512mb of ram.. I play Doom 3, and various other large games and don't have trouble with it..
It's got built in wireless, 15.4 in widescreen, 60 gig hd, ethernet wired, modem, and is a joy to use.
Cost me $799 and had a $200 rebate in the US.

I would suggest that you look for a laptop that has at 1.7 ghz or above, with intel core duo with at least 512mb or 1Gb ram and has a Nvidia graphics card, cause then you can still use the laptop for normal use, and when you need to play games and the like, then you have the graphics you need. Just do not get anything that has an intel grahics card in it as these use shared memory. Also be wary of the ati graphic cards as some of them use shared memory cards and others do not.
