I go with the hope of that slight chance of meeting someone interesting who shares my views and isn't really there because of a love of partying. I agree that it's usually a real waste, but then for some people, partying's fun, because they actually enjoy getting drunk, which I never found very interesting.

Lame and time wasting? Do you need a friend? What do you do for fun besides sit in front of the computer and ask questions on Yahoo? Life is short so we must all make the best of it. Partying, whether it's at a friends house, or going to a bar or a club, is a way to let loose and have a great time. Also, the mentality that I take with me when partying, is free spirited and fun loving. I feel sorry for people like you, the ones who don't know how to enjoy life.

You are just jealous because you are shy, or think you are and therefore become not-fun.
Perhaps you have yet to find a good group of friends, or maybe you don't see people as friends at all, merely acquiantances? I think that you should take some risks in finding friends.

When I hang out with friends, I know who I am going with and I expect the least amount of fun to occur. As long as I have friends I don't get tired of, I could do it all night!
And I also find an area that is my expertise, like sitting on the porch with a cigar and I let people come to me so we can have conversations. I know where I stand in these groups, so I use an equal amount of inversion/hard-to-get tactics and extrovertedness.
There are other fun things to do at parties besides drugs and drinking and sex... not sure what they would be, but I always seem to figure out the best things to do with myself.

Actually, nobody is forcing you to go anyway. Each person have their own opinion. Some like it and some (like you) dont. Not all guys go to a party to pick up girls. We rather say it as networking, which is true. And speaking of experience, it works. We exchanged business cards and from there grows a great human communication that lead to a new found friendship. Some would go there to destress themselves from work - they would go dancing or talked to people so as to forget about their trouble at work. Hey whatever is possible.... if you think its crappy to be at a party, then dont go thru with it.... but if u think u wanna give it a shot, hey the door is always welcome....nobody gonna stop u :) whatever u do, have fun :D

I've never been to parties but was always jealous of those who did. They seemed to have had all the fun while I was left out. It could very well be lame and a waste of time, but any such judgement will be judged as based on ignorance and jealousy.

Best to just leave it alone.

Partying is our way of relating to others...this actually is an age old practice...
it's a way for people to kind of sniff out potential mates.
I did my share of partying in college, and even after...and after bartending for 6 years, partying just naturally died out for me. As much as I see it as a waste of time, I still enjoyed myself, and it helped me to relate to people my age. It also helped me realize how much I could drink without blacking out. I never played those lame drinking games, because i'm a total lightweight and got sick everytime.

I believe one possible is the idea that people are different when they are drinking. They will do stuff they would never so when they were not drinking. This gives them what they think is an out to be someone different and try differnet thing where they can blam it on the booze. Just an idea

I agree a wast of time, majority of the time they are overly crowded and almost all the time filled to the brim with people that are too self absorbed. There are just to many people. Not that I am anti-social.

Then don't go! Parties are a great way to hang out with friends, meet new people, have fun doing it. What do you do for fun? I go to parties!

Its just a way of socializing. Humans are social creatures by nature. We have a natural need to accept and be accepted. Though this escapes some of us somehow.
