I hate to burst your bubble, but Robin Hood was a fictitious character. However, he is an important part of English mythology. Most sources say that he was created by minstrels in the thirteenth century. Later, written versions appear.
The most commonly held myth is that Robin Hood was a former nobleman (Lord Loxley) whose lands were confiscated by the Sheriff of Nottingham while he (Robin) was away fighting the Crusades to regain the Holy Land.
The sheriff took orders from Prince John (probably a reference to the unpopular King John, of about that era). Prince John was supposed to be "house-sitting" for King Richard, while he was away on another crusade. (There were, actually, waves of crusades during the Middle Ages.)
However, the myth of Robin Hood does not deal with the major war; that is, the Crusades. Instead it centers on Robin Hood's skirmishes with the Sheriff. With the aid of his band of Merry Men, he always overcomes the Sheriff, regains his lands, and wins the hand of the Maid Marion, apparently a noblewomen in the protection of King Richard.
When Richard returns from the Holy Lands, he deposes John and returns Robin Hood's land to its rightful owner.
Cute story, but no one's been able to supply any facts to substantiate it.

After the Third Crusade, Richard began his homeward journey to England. Put ashore by bad weather he found himself in Austria home of Leopold, whom Richard had angered by actions during the crusade. Leopold captured King Richard and imprisoned him in his castle. Eager for a piece of the action the Emperor of Germany offered Leopold 75,000 marks for Richard taking him into custody in Germany.
