hobo does derive from the term "homeless body" which first originated during the great depression. many people who had no homes and had lost everything from the stock market were classified as "homeless bodies" in governmental assistance forms (such as soup kitchens that oppened up and the start of the welfare projects). The government at the time needed a terminology to classify such people, hence the term HOBO (homeless bodies)
