yes. if lightning hits sand, it will make a rough glass tube, puddle, or branch that runs through the sand. these are called fulgurites. they do not look like the sweet home alabama one though, that is just aesthetic.

Yes. Planting an iron bar in the sand will attract lightning. The heat will melt the sand into glass. Just don't touch or transport the bars during the actual lightning storm.

Yes. Lightning is VERY hot. Much hotter than the ovens they melt sand in to make glass commercially. I do not recommend you try it, unless you really know what you are doing. If you do it anyway, stand far away, maybe in a car not touching any metal. Put the steaks out before the storm. Not before it rains, or you hear it. Look at the weather Chanel, and put them out if the storm is more than 20 miles away. If you let it get close, you will see no rain, and hear no thunder, but the lightning can still jump ahead and hit you. I recommend studying it, but if you will not, do what I said.

It is real. to a certain extent.
"A mineral known as fulgurite can form when lightning comes into contact with certain rocks, especially sand."
Fulgurite generally, however, is not clear as protrayed in the movie, but it can be different colors, based on the mineral content in the affected area. There is an interesting article about fulgurite on wikipedia.

Yah this really happens. We had it happen here recently. Lightning hit a radio tower, and at the bottom of the tower the road crew (and me and my friends who jumped the fence beforehand >_>) found the sand had become glass. Was pretty fragile, but it was glass.
