Yes I did! But you know what? It built character, something I think that could of been lacking in my adult life.

I was the youngest of seven children and we were on welfare. There were times when all we had for food was bread and water with vinegar in it! But we were clean nevertheless and I never felt like we were poor because it wasn't mentioned around our house or neighborhood as a matter of fact. My mom stretched things as far as she could and did a fantastic job! My dad helped now and then but it really wasn't that much he didn't live at the house, they were separated and in those days no one really took anyone to court to pay child support. My childhood was fun and had its ups and downs. My brothers made go carts out of milk crates and pieces of wood and we had races up and down the city streets. We cooled off in the summer by opening the fire hydrant or running under a hose.I could tell a lot more but I think this is enough really.

Not so much poverty....but there were four kids (six people total in our family) and no, we didn't have much. My father worked in Guyana (South America) fixing jet airliners a lot when I was little, making not much over minimum wage. My mother took care of all four of us while working full time. Three of us were in school while my baby brother was in day care. My oldest sister made sure we got off the bus from school good. Then my mom and little brother got home about 7:00 pm. There wasn't a whole lot of time we got to spend with our parents. And they barely made any money, even though they had both gone to college. But we were happy. We knew how much our parents worked was to give us what we needed and wanted. No, we didn't have a huge house with a pool, but we weren't in a little shack either. We did the best we could with what we had. And it almost always looked like we had more than we did. We made sure we didn't act poor, and we never went on food stamps or stole. We learned very early on that we worked for what we wanted, and if we didn't have it, it was okay. It was only material, and it didn't matter. So, even though my parents' incomes was quite a bit below what Americans in general would call poverty level, we never felt that way, and we never looked it.

Examples : Went to school with no shoes > Mother made most of my clothes > Scavenged in garbage tips > Ate discarded sweets > Ate grass seeds, plants, flowers > Never went to doctor > Never had Christmas or Birthday presents > Ashamed to bring friends home ( Migrant hut ).

All that said, children are adaptive and on the whole I had a good childhood.

Nope, not at all. I am a middle-class, white girl. Thank you mom and dad!

That said, I would like to point out that mom and dad pinched pennies. We didn't go on vacations every year. When I was young my mom made most of our clothes. But we were never "poor". My father was dirt poor when he was a kid and never wanted to live like that again. He made us work hard with chores and stuff but we never wanted for anything.

When my family moved into town the neighborhood was really mixed, Italians, Irish, Mexican, Black, etc. We were poor, but we made do. I remember working for my Grandpa for fifty cents a day when I was twelve. I still don't know how my mom did it.

We were poor but I never realized it until I was an adult. We had everything we needed, not much of what we wanted and nothing extra.
