Condoms are probably the cheapest, readily available form of birth control and have very few side effects.
The only typical side effects are when people are allergic to Nonoxyl-9 or people allergic to latex.
There are very few people like this though.

The biggest side effect in my opinion is the absence of some feeling during sex. No its not harful, but, nevertheless annoying.

Female condoms are a little bit better. They consist of a ring and a deep latex bag. The ring allows the bag to be pushed deep inside the vagina by the penis without allowing the bag to fall in and spill semen. Of course, there is still the possibility of loss of sensation during sex.

There is also a new implant called NORPLANT which is inserted through minimal invasive surgery into the woman's arm. Norplant releases progestin hormone in the woman's body and the lining of her vagina thickens making it impossible to get pregnant.
The only downside of Norplant is that unless you are certain that your partner has no STD's, it in no way prevents the transmission of HIV or other STD's such as herpes or Trichomaniasis.
Also Norplant as well as any birth control device that releases hormones into the bloodstream can cause side effects in women who are extremely sensitive to changes like this in their bodies - some symptoms include no menstruation and swelling of the breasts.

The Sponge is an OK birth control but, all it does is release a spermacide. The sponge cannot protect a woman against HIV transmission or other STDS.

There is also the cervical cap which blocks entrance to the uterus by Sperm. The Cervical cap's downsides are that during rough sex with a huge penis, it may come dislodged and allow sperm to impregnate the woman. Also, it cannot protect you against STD / HIV transmission.

Basically, the best Birth Control is the condom. To escape the side effects of nonoxyl-9 (if you are allergic) you can buy a non lubricated condom. If you are allergic to latex, you can also buy newer condoms that don't use latex, rather a synthetic plastic.

The female condom used with a compatible spermacidal jelly ensures that in the event the condom does break, those little sperms don't get you pregnant - if also feels fantastic for botht he guy and girl.
