I have windows XP. My computer has become very slow. I frequently keep surfing. I have come to know if we surf the Internet, our computer keeps creating the Temporary Internet Files which should be deleted from time to time otherwise the system becomes slow.

I tried to gain access to Temporary Internet Files on my computer but in vain. Could you guide me how can I reach these files so as to speed up my computer?

I have also learnt that Defragmentation is also useful in increasing the speed. Could you advise how can I find this feature on my computer?

I'd be thankful if you could provide some other tips to increase the speed of my computer which has become somewhat slow.

Thanks

To delete those files, simply go into internet explorer, click on Tools, click on Internet Options, then, when that opens, go down to where it says Delete Cookies and press that button.. When that is done, click on Delete Files and that will clear the temp folder files. After you have done both of those, close IE, go to your Recycle Bin, empty that, then, and only then, run Scandisk and then run Defrag.
Then, reboot the computer and you should see a speed difference.

Temporary internet files are also called cache when you are surfing the net. It is there to help speed up website you have been to before so you would not need to refresh the webpages. To remove them, you can do two ways. One way is if you are using Internet explorer, go to Tools>Internet options. On the display, you should see a section called temporary internet files. Click on delete cookies and delete files. Below is a button for clearing history. You can also clean this if you want to. The second method is to use windows explorer and navigate to c:\document and settings\\local settings\temporary internet files. You can manually delete these files. They are the same ones you would delete on method 1.

Defragmentation of your drives can be done occassionally. It is consolidating your free spaces together to make large segments of free spaces. This is located at : start (lower left corner) > programs > administrative tools > computer management. A display will appear. Select disk fragmentation and then highlight the drive you would like to perform a defrag. Do an analyze and determine if the drive needs to be defrag.

There can be many reasons why your pc is slow. If you have small memory (RAM), this can make you pc run slow. Another is having virus or spyware on your pc causing slowness. In this case, you would need a virus tool to remove the virus and spyware utilities to run on your machine to remove them on occcassions.

Hope this help. Good luck.

Documents & Settings> current user>Local settings> temp int files. ( Delete daily)
Start>programs>accessories>sys tools>defragment. (Once in every 2 weeks).

Well, must have antivirus, anti ad/spywares installed.
Also don't forget to install Registry cleaner softwares like ccleaner/regcleaner to clean Windows registry as uncleaned registry remains the no 1 reason for OS crashes. If ur sys hangs often and mouse freezes without reasons then it's time to clean ur registry.

To reach and delete your temp files, click on tools and then internet options. Click on "delete files" and then click in box next to "delete offline content". Then click OK. To defrag, go to "my computer" and right click the icon for your hard drive. Click on tools tab and you will see the place for defragging.
