First: Don't listen to monkey jones.

Now, I'm really concerned with the size of your "tank". The only thing I would put in a 3g is a betta. You say you have 3 fish in it. Unless your fish aren't expected to grow more than 1/2" when they're adults, you're overcrowding your tank. This will harm the fish and spike your chemical levels.

The amount of food also depends on the type of fish. Just give them a small amount (no more than they can eat in 2 min) 1-2 a day. Also, never measure food in your hand since this can transfer over even more harmful bacteria.

Please add details about what type of fish you have.

For most fish once a day is fine. When in doubt a PINCH should be sufficient! Did you know that a fish's stomach is about the size of their eye? I am concerned about size of their tank! When you bought the fish, who advised you on the tank&fish? Many fish keep GROWING! A general rule is ONE gallon of water per INCH of fish. Many others will grow to the size of their home. Are you feeding them the correct food? There are different types for different fish. If in doubt, get THEE to the nearest fish store for advice. It could really help you and your fish have a LONG&HAPPY life together.

A three gallon tank is relatively large, so you should put more food in the tank everytime they run out. This should be about 25 times a day. My fish is seven years old and that is my technique for feeding him. Just make sure you have someone to feed him if you go on vacation or something. Just put in about 10 or 12 flakes or pellits everytime you feed them.

what kind? once a day should be plenty, but only put in as much as they can eat within about 2 minutes. The left over food turns into toxins. Especially since your bowl only holds 3 gallons.
