I think danceman528 pointed out why Ortiz is so depended upon. Without him in the lineup, they would just pitch around Manny. The Red Sox would be awful without Big Papi.

I don't think the Red Sox depend on Ortiz too much... they have many other players that can step up and fill in for Ortiz... yes... Ortiz is a great player and a very very clutch player... but I think if he got hurt the Red Sox would still finish in 1st or 2nd place... not 3rd.

I believe that even though Big Papi is a big part of the Red Sox's hitting and offense, if he got hurt Manny, would still be keeping up the teams power. They still have some 300 hitters in their lineup like Mike Lowell and Mark Loretta. I do not think that Ortiz would make a drastic difference.

To Danceman,,,,,, Does Manny have 101 RBI's and always come through in clutch hitting when it counts ??? No!! It's great to have Ortiz and Manny one after the other, but in the bottom of the 9th with the Red Sox trailing by 1, 2 outs and a runner on 2nd,,,,would you rather have Manny at the plate or Ortiz ??? Think about it. Ortiz is one of the best clutch hitters in baseball history. Your the man PAPI !!!

The Red Sox do not depend too much ortiz. Although he does provide most of the offense, Boston has some of the best reserves in the majors, with Alex Cora and company. If the pitching held up while he was out they'd be okay

Consider too though, Ortiz is a DH.
Hit By Pitch is the only real fear - you take a fastball on the hands, you could be looking at all sorts of problems.
Otherwise, I can't image him with a lower body injury - not too many guys end on the DL during a Home Run trot.
Seriously though, the most likely kind of injury he might encounter would end up as a 15 day stint on the DL, and 2 weeks over the course of a season would not send them south.

I think that the sox have to depend on Big Papi because now that they lost Damon they need more weapons but i mean Ortiz is one of the most explosive batters in the MLB so why not put pressure on him

I would have to say that the Red Sox depend on ALL their players! They all work as a TEAM and don't depend on just one player.
That's why the Red Sox can get themselves out of a losing situation....they work as a TEAM to win!

Boy, I get tired of pointing out to Ortiz fans that he isn't even the best hitter on his team. Manny Ramirez is not only the best hitter on the Red Sox, he is the best hitter in the AL. Red Sox Nation, please wake up and give the love to the man who deserves it, Manny Ramirez.
To the Ortiz lovers, do you know that Ortiz leads MLB in PA with runners on base (ROB). That with 382 runners on base he has only driven in 66 of them. That Ortiz has the lowest ratio of ROB/(Other Runners Batted In) than anyone in the top ten of RBI's. That Ortiz bats ahead of Manny and that pitchers are so afraid of Ramirez that they pitch to Ortiz. Manny's has a higher OB% and Slugging % than Ortiz. So does Jermaine Dye, Jim Thome and Travis Hafner.
Ortiz drives in more runs because he has more opportunities. Simple as that. Yet Red Sox Nation is full of ignorant fools.Good luck watching the Yankees make the playoffs ahead of you.

I think they would still be a good team, but Ortiz is their big clutch hitter. Think about how many games we've won in the 9th because of Ortiz. I think Ramirez wouldn't get pitched to if Ortiz wasn't in the lineup, and since he's our best hitter, we would be in trouble.
