Well the first thing that you have to find out is to see if the substance you have is polar or nonpolar. Once you find this out then you need a solution that is the same, meaning polar or nonpolar because likes dissolve like. Polar solutes will dissolve in Polar solvents, and Non-polar solutes will dissolve in Non-polar solvents.

what it can dissolve in or what it's currently dissolved it. it's gonna go with carbon tet or the like nonpolar. HgS is nasty stuff so be wary
