What the heck is an "emo" kid? Is it the new way of saying Special Ed or something?

I keep hearing about "emo" kids. What are they?

"Emo" is one of these weird words that really got bastardized by pop culture. It was originally a type of punk in the 1980s, and its meaning changed several times since. It's short for "Emotional" and refers to a very emotion-driven form of punk and/or pop rock. The problem with the term, of course, is that ALL music is, to some degree, emotion-driven. And I think any band with the Emo label is going to tell you they consider themselves rock, not Emo, and sort of pose the question "what is Emo anyways?"

Nowadays it really refers to the whiney perky pop rock that's out nowadays that are heavily influenced by Dashboard Confessional (i.e. oh my life is so miserable, sob sob) with a strong dash of Green Day just to make it more consumable.

And "emo kids" are kids who listen to emo and dress a certain way. It's a mish-mash of styles that borrows from nerd, indie, punk, goth, and (mostly) skater. If you want to be an emo kid, Hot Topic is going to be your starting point. While some of these kids will say "hey I'm not emo, I've got my own thing going on!" (yea right), some really go all out to BE "emo." And THIS is where the whole term and look comes from- the kids that are trying to establish and perpetuate this massive nation-wide subculture genre to fit into. So it ends up really having little to do with music, and more to do with how you act, how you dress, and who you hang out with (as well as what bands to listen to- hence, "Emo" bands)

So, to answer your question- yes. It is, in fact, a new way of saying Special Ed. :)

Overly emotional, making a spectacle of one's emotions. Emo kids are really into music that is sad, and often cut themselves, or say they cut themselves. They play on the dark and depressed sections of their lives, and though they may have a lot of fun, feel compelled to deny themselves real happiness. Emo kids generally manifest depression and develop it without even knowing it. Aside from music they write poetry and lyrics, usually about broken hearts.

Emo kids have great hair though.

No they are not special ed. Some are guys that wear girl pants or tight pants and have weird hair. They cry about their lives. It kinda reminds me of how a gothic person would act if they were a bunch of sissy's and momma's boys. And they dress like punk rockers, but in a more sissy and girlie way. Gross.

emo kids are scene kids. its the same. they all have the same hair cut and wear the same clothes.
the hair is always black and/or some other color and its always chopped off and uneven
the clothes: girls wear girly clothes like alot of colors. guys wear girl pants and black.
