Yesterday morning I was able to work on my laptop in wireless mode, the router upstairs connected to my Motorola Surfboard modem. I went out for a few hours, and came back to find I could no longer make a connection to the Internet. (I have it set to 64-bit, WEP, etc.) The laptop showed the wireless network in its list, but, nothing happens when I try to repair the connection - it stalls in the "Acquiring IP" step. Even with hardwiring my laptop into the router I couldn't make a connection. To make sure it wasn't my cable service, I connected my laptop direct to the modem, which worked like a charm.

Should I reset the router, and do I need to be hardwired to the router to do so? I want to avoid spending $50 on a new router. BTW, I tried direct-connecting another desktop unit into the router, with no luck there.

Usually this problem can be cleared by just power clearing (turn it off wait 20 seconds and turn it on) the router. You usually can set a router back to factory mode by holding down the reset button for 20 or 30 seconds, but then you will need to re-enter the security configuration. It can be done via wireless but easier to connect to the lan ports on the router.

Hello,
Yes Router can go wrong but Very Rarely. Try to RESET your router. I mean put it on the Factory Default. Don't try to upgrade the Firmware, thats one of the stupidest Answer i have ever heard. Its like your TV has some proble, Hammer it down. So don't bother about upgrading the firmware. Disconnect all the cables from Router and the Modem and Computer.Start the computer without Connecting to Router. Then Shut it Down. Connect Modems and Routers then Start your Computer again. If still it does not work then Visit my Site HardwareGuroo.com and post the problem there, i will spend some time and try to solve your proble.
Cheers

You should upgrade the firm ware on it. Reset it first to get it working, then upgrade the firmware. Give that a try and see if it works.....if not, then get a new router!!

Reboot it. If that fails use the factory reset and do your configurations again in the router.

after recyling/resetting your router and if it still does not work. change the ip address from 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.2.1, it may work again
