In the movie Red Dawn the Russians did not win the war. The majority of the US was still free despite they're occupying most of the northwest.
I don't really think this compares well to Iraq were the US does not wish to remain permanently. They'll leave as soon as they think it will be possible without allowing a civil war to break out.

Yes, you're right that Red Dawn was just a movie, although I'd like to think that all fine young Americans would form guerilla resistance groups and wreak the kind of havoc that the "Wolverines" did.
In Iraq, I think there were a number of errors in judgement and a fairly significant lack of planning for "worst-case" occupation scenarios. I think we also lacked the political will and intestinal fortitude to achieve total victory early on. We were in such a hurry to declare that the mission was accomplished, that we failed to decisively achieve that victory. The strategic errors included disbanding the military in its entirety and focusing too heavily on "De-Baathification" vs. leaving operating structures intact that could be adjusted on a more incremental basis. Also, we failed to deal with Al-Sadr early on when we could have (and should have) dealt him out of the conflict. What's more, we tactically screwed up by making two bad choices for the occupational authority role in Paul Bremer and Tony Zinni. I think a "Powell Doctrine" (i.e. way more troops) version of the war would have been more successful, although we still might have made the bad choices with regard to internal Iraqi institutions.
We are just continuing to prove that our military is made for one thing - fighting and winning war, not "police" actions like an occupation. However, if we are going to do those things, we need to take a very firm grip on the country and not let go until we are 100% sure that they are ready for self-rule.

I think that same situation could very well occur in Iraq. If the Iraqi government tells us to leave, or if the American leadership changes, we could be out of the country in a short time.
As for what Americans would do, I guess you mean what would we do if we were invaded. In most situations, I think we would fight against the invaders. However, if somehow we had been subjugated under a tyrannical, genocidal leader, I think we would welcome the invaders as liberators...as long as we knew they wouldn't stick around and become worse than the original tyrant.
(To those who would remark that we are living under such a tyrannical leader...get back to me when Bush rounds up 100,000 Americans for execution a la Hussein.)

Iraq is not what it seems, its people are not the ones that are doing all the bombing and stuff, at least not all of them. Iran and Syria are behind these things. the other day i saw this Iraqi politician who said "Syria and Iran have killed twice as much Iraqis than Americans". the problem with USA is that they are going after the wrong objective, they ought to take out Iran first and then Syria will destroy it self when they have no more allies to defend them. Iraq wasn't much of a threat as Iran is.

Enlist Patrick Swayze and get the Governor of California into BodyBuilding shape again... but back to your question....yeah..it could be very similar in Iraq and I think Americans will pull out prematurely.
