I have a 600m Dell Laptop, recently the disk drives (D and E) have stopped recognizing CDs and DVDs. They are enabled, and I can hear the computer try to spin the disc. I don't know if its a problem with the actual drive or just some software malfunction. I have tried downloading the drivers off the Dell site and it did not seem to work.
I would appreciate any help and please use details as I am not computer savy. Thanks.

u are not very clear
i assume u'r operating system is in hard disk c:
> correct
is d: a partition in hard disk
e: is cd / dvd drive ... correct !
.. now assuming i'm correct, what happens if u insert disk in tray
is the movie or volume title shown up in 'my computer' ?
what is the software u r referring 2 , sonic ?
>>> most times, laser is clogged / dirty
a simple lens clean should work ... try and tell
use dry tissue paper !
a safer option would be to get a lens cleaner

First of all, I am a little confused, as in all my work I have never seen a laptop with more than one CD drive. I will go on the assumption that one is external.
If they both stopped working at the same time, then it is almost certainly a Windows software problem. I have seen something like this before, and it is somewhat rare. I do not have the information on how to fix it, and if I find it I will update this entry.
There are two things you can try:
1) Search support.microsoft.com (good luck, the site is a little madening to use), to try to find an answer to this issue. This will likely take quite some time.
2) Back up your data, and perform a System Restore back to before the problem started happening. Then keep a close eye on what changes are made that might cause this to happen again. WARNING: This may cause files to be lost. Backing up data is critical.

Next time don't buy a Dell, they use refurbished parts, that's why they have problems like the ones you are experiencing.
The disc drive just went bad, maybe the laser. Call Dell and tell them to fix it fo ya.
You could also open up the disc tray and look at where the laser is sitting... when you open up the tray you'll see this square silver metal piece with a little circular lens. that's the laser that reads the disc. That should sit close to the center of the CD, sometimes if your laptop gets jostled around the box could move out towards the outside of the CD and not read discs. This happened to my friends laptop, so what i did was push the box and click it back into position where it was all the way back to the center. but make sure you DON'T TOUCH THE LENS... otherwise it'll be broken forever. I hope that helps.

Go through Control Panel, find the Add Hardware, in the list find the DVD-CD drive and try to uninstall the drive.....then restart the laptop and try to play a CD or DVD, you don't have to install anything, just play the CD.....if it keeps giving you trouble, you have to take it to get fix....I had the same problem, the first few times I uninstall the hardware and then played a CD, it worked......then a few weeks later it kept happening, so I took it in for a tune-up. Good Luck.

hmm i'm not the best with lap tops. Most Techs outside the actual company hate to work on them,,, so complicated.
I would call DELL or go to DELL.com and chat with a tech person. Your cd-dvd drive might be malfunctioning. Try another cd-dvd also.
