The qualifications and curriculum board are putting forward proposals to remove from the curriculum the teaching of right and wrong, instead to teach "secure values and beliefs" (whatever that means) Do you think that state education is being reduced to producing cannon fodder and is becoming aimless for children

Of course it is. Teachers are being forced to teach the values and self-esteem that children should have learned at home. It is almost as if we have become "big brother" and all the education of the young is done by the government.

Maybe I have been in this field for too long. I want back the days where I could walk into the class room and just teach my subject. I was not their mother, I was a teacher! If a child did not behave the principal took care of it and that was the end of the bad behavior.

A child needs to know right from wrong long before starting school. School was designed to education the children to get them ready to go out into the world and become productive citizens. I fear for our future when I look at the students coming out of school now.

Utterly. Being a school librarian (secondary school) I see such nonsense going on which passes for teaching. One of our English teachers needed me (a lowly librarian!) to correct her grammar and spelling for her in a written piece. So some of our teachers simply aren't up to the job. Having said that, the government keeps moving the goalposts and teachers are often demoralised. They have been stripped of any authority they used to have and can't discipline and keep order any more. We are storing up SO much trouble for our society in the years to come. We are failing our young people and we will pay the price - or they certainly will.

That sounds pretty stupid to me. Character education isn't controversial AT ALL in my district. It would never occur to me to change it from "right and wrong" to "most people think stealing is wrong." Call me crazy.
