It is a family name, ( my mother's maiden name), I always thought was purely German. Last week my sister was told by a Greek that this is a Greek name so we are confused and wonder if any one out there really knows? Thank you so much.

It appears to have its roots in Greece. It first appears as the name of a greek general , and the next reference I found was St. Jerome, and he was born in an area that is noe Bosnia. The german side to the family come a little later.

Here's where I started looking

Hieronimus is the German of Hieronymus (so you're both right). It was a fairly common first name (Hieronymus Bosch) in Germany. Both are derivitives of the name Jerome.
A famous Greek general and contemporary of Alexander the Great was named Hieronymous of Cardia.
