I would like to do one for my business but am unsure how to make it not viewable by the public. Any "GOOD" explanaition would be great. Thanks in advance.

You can put it on a computer that only is accessible to internal traffic, or set up a firewall to block external connections like mentioned above.

All you have to do (easy if you have Win2003 Server or Linux servers - see below for an alternate method) is install/set up a web server inside the firewall, and just don't let anyone trying to use port 80 past the firewall, or point it somewhere other than at that intranet server.

I have set this up using both Linux and Windows, and works fairly well. I must sa that I am partial to Linux (apache) for it's greater control, but most people don't know how to use it. At a pinch, you can install Apache (www.apache.org) onto a PC and use that to host an intranet web server.

An intranet does not have to be registered in any form with the outside world. If you don't have a DNS server at the business, then the users will have to type in it's IP address to get to it. Of course you could always just put a shortcut on their desktops to get around this minor annoyance.

The best way to make it not viewable by the public is to put it behind a firewall. On your router, just block incoming traffic from the outside world to your server on port 80. That'll ensure that only people behind the firewall can see your site.

An intranet site would be set up like any web page, except that, instead of publishing it to the internet (where the world could access it) you publish it to a server in your workplace where the local network (lan) can access it.
