There is no easy answer to this question. I really believe that "old boys' networks" and "Glass Ceilings" are for real. However, I also believe that smart and well trained people will prosper (unless they are subject to overt discrimination).

I think that biggest thing that connections give you is opportunity and access. I got that interview for my current job partly because a friend worked at the company. That connection alone was not enough to get the job, but it was enough for me to get in the door. I have also heard that most jobs are never 'listed', that is, that only people who have the right connections ever hear about the opportunity.

This is an excellent question, the world pushes education telling people that can't get anywhere with just an high school education. Yet and still some of the places I have worked for I've seen son, daughters, cousins, you name it being hired and a whole heap of unfair treatment.

I do believe in some cases it is "what you know' but in the majority of the cases it is defiantly "who you know"

Of course, who you know is the best, but what you know is also important.

Sometimes, you know someone, and still can't the job because of that who you know is not the decision maker. If you know who, make sure that is a decision making who, not just any who! Or you may need what you know to make it up!

It is always easier if you have an in. However, a lot of people still expect you to earn your keep once you are hired.
