For a free site with no ads and up to 50MB of space I suggest ATSPACE.COM. I have two websites through them and the uptime is great. You'll need an ftp program to upload your stuff. There's a good free one for personal use called "FTP Explorer". Of course you'll either need to learn HTML or use one of the WYSIWYG programs like FrontPage or DreamWeaver to actually design your site. If you need some help, e-mail me...

I know your original question was about free hosting but you can get pretty decent hosting for only a few bucks a month and not have to worry about the ads and what not that usually come with free hosting.
Check out this site for some pretty good info and reviews of cheap hosting providers:

Hope that helps

You get what you pay for. Free web hosting will limit you in one fashion or another. There is plenty of hosting out there that is totally unobtrusive for $1.00 a month.

Lots of sites offer free web hosting, however, they may include popup ads - try www.geocities.com or www.angelfire.com

Free does exist, but you get what you pay for.
I have a website (http://aboutmardigras.com) that is hosted at MELS Hosting (http://melshosting.com) - they've been reliable and are reasonably priced. not free, but worth it.

Yes it does, I've tried it myself before and i would suggest www.freewebs.com but first you would have to go through a process like making a user name, password, etc. Do Not GET The Basic. Get the advanced so you can just paste your HTML that you have ready.

Actually Yahoo 360 is pretty good if you are just starting out. It gets you connected to a lot of people in a hurry.
Otherwise, yeah, geocities would be one.

the four worst free hosts are
http://www.freewebs.com/ your pages have to be there for 6 weeks before the forms on your pages are allowed to work. after 50 file uploads you have to pay. they don't give you much data transfer. you need lots of it when you use photos, movies, mp3 etc. they put two ads on each of your pages
http://www.angelfire.com/ they don't give you much data transfer. you need lots of it when you use photos, movies, mp3 etc. they put 5 ads on each of your pages.
http://www.tripod.com/ they don't give you much data transfer. you need lots of it when you use photos, movies, mp3 etc. they put 5 ads on each of your pages.
http://www.bravenet.com/ they don't give you much data transfer. you need lots of it when you use photos, movies, mp3 etc.
