I heard him say that it isn't a coincidence that with the presence of democracy, that Hamas is fighting back, as well as AL Qaeda. But the majority of the troops are Iraqis, and Hamas was democratically elected. If our point was to bring democracy to a country, shouldn't we accept who THEY elect, and stay out of it?

It doesn't matter what anybody thinks about Hamas. They were elected. Are we going to tell these countries who they can vote for? Lots of people not too happy with Bush, but he's still president, and much more controversial elections than Hamas...

Bush made a mockery of Democracy. He isolated the late president Arafat and insisted on an alternative democratically elected government. The people elected Hamas but he refused to recognize them and keeps calling them terrorists. We may disagree with their methods but the fact remains that they are legitimate resistance against occupation by a foreign country( Israel) .The right to resist is sacred.

Hamas is a terrorist organization, and if the Palestinians want to elect them that is fine, but don't expect the world to accept them when they keep their terrorist activities alive. The world would accept Hamas if it would focus its energies for the good of the Palestinians and not the destruction of Israel. Just because you were voted in, it doesn't give you carte Blanche to keep up the terrorism activities.

Hamas was elected by the Palestinians, not the Iraqis. Two different elections. Good question.

Leogirl nailed it... just because they won at the ballot box does not give them the right to export their terrorism... It may have made them legitimate for some window of time in their own area, but Palestinians have to learn that it takes a lot more than a win at the ballot box to make a government legitimate, especially if they don't discontinue to act like terrorist thugs.

Fidel Castro always gets 99.9% of the vote in his elections too... doesn't give him anymore credibility, I'm thinking...

I agree and that is why Bush has stated that Israel has the right to defend herself. What needs to be understood is that Israel deems hezbollah a threat based upon recent and previous attacks on Israeli soldiers and terror attacks in Israeli public places. America is staying out of it except for selling weapons. If we stay out of it who will make China & Iran stay out of it and suspend their weapons sales to hezbollah? If political leaders were really serious about stopping the war then all nations need to suspend weapons sales to both sides and let them settle things amonst themselves. And if one side cries foul everyone should understand that the point of war is to crush your enemy into submission - so they can't retailate.
But talking about accepting a democratically soverign nations opininons should be something to take up with Dean, Dayton, Schumer, and Boxer - to name just a few. Why can't they accept the national opininon of Allawi? He is the elected prime minister of Iraq - not a puppet as some leaders want.

Similarly so did Hitler...

Democracy is a tool to achieve free society.
It is not a guarantee and it can be misused by people, like massacres done during the French Revolution.

Just because a terrorist organization is democratically elected does not make them responsible peace loving individuals. They commit terrorist acts, want to see Israel destroyed and train those who go to other countries and kill people.

Remember Hitler and Hussein were "democratically elected" and both were murderers, rapist, committed genocide, etc. Would you have wanted to leave them alone?
