Yes... It is safe...

As long as U don't visit the southern Island of Mindanao... The Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) is a special region which covers the territories predominantly populated by Muslims.

ARMM has its own government unlike almost all the other regions in the country. It consists of almost the whole of the Sulu Archipelago (Isabela City of Basilan is part of the Zamboanga Peninsula region) and two provinces in the mainland.

The provinces located in the Sulu Archipelago are Basilan, Sulu, and Tawi-Tawi. Basilan and Tawi-Tawi are themselves the main islands of their respective provinces, while the main island of Sulu is Jolo Island.

The mainland provinces are Lanao del Sur and Maguindanao. Cotabato City, which is not part of the ARMM, is the region's administrative center.

Yes, it is very safe for an American to travel to the Philippines. I have made 3 trips there and I've always felt completely safe. It helps that the people are incredibly friendly and helpful. It would be helpful, however, to know what area of the Philippines you are planning to visit. If you use common sense and stay aware of your surroundings (just like you would travelling anywhere), you should have no trouble in areas such as Manila, Cebu, Boracay, or Bohol. It is true that it isn't a good idea to travel to many areas on the southern island of Mindanao. However, I have spent a great deal of time in Cagayan De Oro (on the north coast of Mindanao) and it is a wonderful city and very safe. I recommend you don't allow the U.S. State Department's travel advisories to scare you away from travelling to the Philippines, as it is a wonderful, and safe, country.

An American is very safe to travel to the Philippines. In fact, everybody will call you "Hi Joe" for a male or "Hi Amerikana" for a girl. Except for some parts of the country like Mindanao, the American can freely roam around to spend their money which is multiplied to 51 times to the peso.

The Philippines maintains very close links to the US and Americans are held in much higher esteem than most other countries.

That said, parts of the Philippines are dangerous for all westerners, particularly in the Muslim areas of the Southern Philippines and a number of pockets of insurgency across the Philippines.

My advice would be to stick to the typical tourist areas such as Peurto Gallera, Boracay, Palawan, Angeles, Subic, Manila, Cebu, Bohol, and Southern half of Luzon and you will be fine.

Also, don't carry lots of cash and valuables on you, keep your wits about you, don't drink too much and get belligerent, treat the people in a courteous manner and you will be fine.

Have a great trip, I'm going to Philippines on Thursday :)

I have been there before and it was fine for me, I am going there again in 2 weeks, I always stuck with the crowds, and I always used my common sense, it is like that no matter what. You don't use your common sense, problems come; everytime. When ever I go I stay, I stay with my fiance, she always know where to go,and where not to go. And don't go to the south Philippines where the muslims are, you might get too paranoid. The Philippines are safe, don't worry about that, just be smart, and shop quickie mart...lol just messin with ya, everything will be fine. There are a ton of Americans that retire in the Philippines, and they are living ok. Good luck my friend and enjoy your trip to the Philippines. I am getting married in 2 weeks to a filipina, that is my reason of being exposed to the philippines, and I loved it there!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi tom! It is safe to travel the philippines. But frankly speaking, June- November is not the best time to visit because the rainy season is in full force. The best way to enjoy the Philippines is from Dec-May. In terms of safety, it really depends on the places you'd like to visit. World news on the Philippines is kinda exaggerated, although for your peace of mind you can check with the Dept of Homeland Security or State Dept for travel advisories. But I tell you it is safe.

If you got the time, visit my blog

email me there if you want more news on the Philippines. you can tell me what places you want to tour or visit, and i can forward information about those places.

It depends on the region you travel to. I think if you stay in Manila it should be pretty safe (if you stay on the more upscale part of town). But there are regions that are controlled by rebels, I think they are muslim fundamentalists. I went to the mountainous region and we had to be escorted by the army. So I'd be somewhat careful. The best thing would be to hire a guide.
