Rainbow vacuums are the best. It cleans the air while you vacuum and it never loses suction. You may want to try ebay. I saw them for around $260 recently. I have a 20 year old rainbow that I bought about 15 years ago for $189. It was a good deal then and it still works great now. I have had to replace the hose after the duct tape wore out.

They're just about the best machine out there. They use water to filter the air before it comes out of the exhaust. There is also a way you can set it up in the middle of a room and purify the air. The only downfall is they are REALLY expensive...like a couple thousand. I've never talked to anyone that has one that regrets paying the price or has any complaints about it.

they are junk! Face it...there is no vacuum that will remove all of the dirt from your carpet, so why pay a fortune for this one.
What you want to look for a a vacuum that has the weight placed at the head of the vacuum and over the motor. With the weight properly distributed, it allows for more pick up.
Kirby and Royal are two recommends, with Royal being less expensive.

Save your money. Consumer Reports shows it as marginally effective with the highest price of any vacuum on the market., My girlfriend who owns a housecleaning business finds it to be cumbersome and hard to work with. It does have the "gee whiz" factor when rolled out however. According to CR a low cost Hoover is much more effective at doing the job of cleaning your carpets, etc. This for less than $200.00.

My mother has one that has to be over thirty years old and that thing still works great. Kind of a pain having to rinse it out every time..but it still does a great job. I'm sorry, but I have no idea how to go about purchasing one of those these days. Your question surprised me because I didn't even know they were still around. This was something my father came home with for her years and years and years ago.

They are good machines, but like everyone is saying, its expensive.
The only problem I had with it is, you MUST empty the water (it uses water instead of a bag or filter) as soon as you empty it or it gets really smelly.
Dyson is cheaper and supposed to be a great machine plus you can get them in purple :)
