I think Diddy had a lot to do with it. He would have huge parties where he would serve it, and they became legendary. Since then, it has become the cool status symbol it now is.

It's just another aspect of the 'bling' lifestyle, since it's so expensive. It's just like showing off diamond encrusted rolexes or grills, and luxury cars, in videos.

Interestingly though, I heard that the brand is now trying to disassociate itself from the hip hop crowd. I think they are trying to pursue action against rappers using the name in their lyrics, in order to redefine their image.

because the bottle itself costs about $1000 and if you can afford to throw away one thousand dollars on alcohol, then your rich and you've made it in the hip hop game i guess.

Because its alcohol and they like to drink it. Its also very expensive so that gives them something to brag about every time they buy some.
