Do not got to any Arthur Murray studio. Go to a private studio.
All franchise have stupid "programs" where they tell you have to learn social dances in a particular order. For ex., If you ever want to learn West Coast Swing, they will make you pay for learning a bunch of other dances first. They are very unflexible in customizing the program to cater your needs or interests.
That is, if you want to learn to dance and you plan to dance for fun or even as a profession. However, if you just need wedding lessons - they *might* be a place to go. I don't mean to say it's not dancing and it doesn't count, but surely all you want is to look good in one dance, no need for endurance, technique or superior lead/follow. They, unlike places that train *dancers*, might have a ready-made wedding patterns.

If you want to learn American Ballroom, I would take from a private studio that is NOT a national franchise...At Arthur Murray, you will pay a fortune for an hour's lesson, and only get about 45 minutes. You do not need privates if you are just learning...you should find Group lessons, you will learn 3 times faster throughout the bronze syllabus, and you will have many different dance partners in any one lesson. My advice is to steer clear of the privates until you are a decent dancer and know all the basic moves in Bronze level. Then, you may want to go to private lessons. There are more Arthur Murray trained instructors teaching at private studios than at Arthur Murray! And there is a reason for it. Trust me on this on. I am Arthur Murray trained, a champion dancer, but I learned most of my skill in private lessons away from Arthur Murray,.the whole franchise system stinks! They spend as much time selling you on "contests', new lessons, etc., as they do teaching.

I would not recommend you go to ANY Arthur Murray or any other franchise/chain studio. They overcharge for substandard lessons and they ALWAYS try to rope you into something else that costs more money. Plus, they try to keep you down at bronze level for as long as they can to squeeze more money out of you. You will end up spending thousands of dollars just on bronze level alone! Another thing they do is you pay for an hour lesson, but they teach you for 45 minutes and the other 15 minutes they spenbd trying to get you to buy something else.
Go to www.ballroomdancers.com or www.dancescape.com and look for an independent studio/instructor in your area.
Also, a chain studio will not teach you international latin or standard, and they are reluctant to teach you West Coast Swing or Night Club Two Step. They only teach American smooth and rhythym. WCS and NC2S are "extras" and if they will teach you those dances, you are gonna pay through the nose.

I agree, All Arthur Murray studios will teach you how to dance, commercially. Usually people go when they want to dance for Weddings etc.
They are use to teaching people who have no rhythm though, so it may be worth it.
