I have saw this before. The whole dash has a ground strap that is not much. You may need to pull the top of the dash off to get to the problem, but you will find a spring steel type thing that looks like a strap. It makes contact with the metal part of the body when installed. Try cleaning it with a spray contact cleaner or sandpaper. This is why when you hit the dash some things would start working. You are on the right track. One other idea would be to run a heavy Gage wire from the firewall to the metal part of the dash, but you MUST use a heavy Gage wire or a ground strap that can be purchased at a good parts store such as NAPA. Make sure the places you hook the strap/wire is cleaned good and secured with a bolt and star type washer that cuts into the metal. This should solve the problem for you. Have fun, good luck!

what i would do, if i was working on this car in my shop, and didn't have access to a wiring diagam, is the following; take the ckt breaker out of the fuse block, and see if there is power to either terminal . if there is, put the breaker back in, remove either the window switch, or the sunroof switch, using the same test light that you used to chk the pwr at the breaker, use the test light to check for power at the wiring connections at the switch, if you have power, that means you lost the ground. if no pwr at anything u checked, then u lost the power feed. chk ALL ALL the fuses, see if one is blown. if banging on the dash made it work sometimes, then my guess is a loose connection in that general area. was a stereo installed recently? any other work done in the dash area? might want to do a simple disassemble to see if a wiring connecter was pulled too tight, and now not making contact. the library is a good place to get a wiring diagram, or take a 12 pk of a cold beverage to the local independant or gm dealer, and bribe them into printing a wiring diagram for you. sometimes these are a 15 minute fix, and sometimes they take hours. art.

You're getting great advice. I'd add one more thing, look for the ground strap that goes between the engine and the frame, and make sure it's making good connection and isn't broken. Add one if you're not sure. Unless everything is well grounded, you will get strange things not working.
