Only if you have just cause to be angry at them, or if you use it in a joking manner. If you want to tell them to be quiet, shut up would not be the right thing to say. It's extremely inconsiderate and considered bad manners, especially for a girl. Like I said, it should only be used in lighthearted, or extreme situations. When you're angry, it's understandable that you would sometimes lose your temper and say things that you wouldn't normally say.

To a some degree yes. Only if you don't like what they are saying. For example for they are saying something negative then tell them to shut up. but in respectable reason the words SHUT UP are very negative words and a more polite word is be quite. I'm sure you already had that lesson before anyways. Know matter who the person is or your relationship to that person/people they deserve respect

Sadly, yes. Cuz sometimes ppl talk too much, and saying "hold on" or "wait please" doesn't cut it. Tho that shouldn't be accepted. Even in an argument, we should allow the other person to vent without interrupting. This venting is what helps a person to calm down. Let the other person get it off of their chest (even if they're wrong) then ask for the same respect U just extended. We can't expect it in return if we don't do it ourselves.

if they talk too much....me and my husband tell each other to shut up all the time....especially if we are arguing...we are both so stubborn and headstrong, and both very loud....we often won't give each other time to get a word in edgewise, so yeah...i think it's okay as long as you don't let it hurt your feelings (and there has to be a mutual understanding). There are some people who will do that out of having the need to be in control, or just to be mean. That's not okay...that's not healthy for anybody.

no, it is rude, it is a put-down and i never allowed it to be said in my home. it is controlling and equivalent of name-calling imho.
try to help the person express their feelings in a less offensive way.
Like "i don't want to hear about that" or "i wish you would be quiet" or "i want to be done with that subject" instead of shut-up

It is not nice... I find it very rude! (if it is not whispered or told as a joke)
One doesn't talk like that to a boyfriend or a girlfriend, not even to a friend if one loves them!!!
