Humanity's greatest weakness is the need for salvation through external authority.

Our greatest weakness, in my opinion, is in the area of recognizing commonality. This leads to many of the statements and one liners above: intolerance, hate, racism, prejudice, ethnic cleansing, genocide.

At some point, we really need to come together as a species and realize that every human life is equal and deserves equal respect and access to basic resources: food, potable water, medicine, clothing (if wanted ;o] ), shelter, education, opportunities.

At what point do we realize that we are all the same, regardless of race?

At what point did we lose sight of this? Why do we war over strips of land, when the Earth is a bountiful place, and we use only a small fraction of its total usable area?

What we need to do in the coming century is to ensure that all basic needs listed above are met for ALL members of humanity.

Considering the amount of land available suitable for agriculture, and our current technological prowess in producing suitable foods and other material products, this is NOT out of the question.

However it requires singular vision and dedication. But it also requires kowledge and understanding.

Currently we work for ourselves, to meet our own individual needs. In this pursuit of self-gratification and the survival of our nuclear and/or extended family unit, we lose sight of the bigger picture of humanity. We're too busy "making ends meet" to try to make things better for others, who may have nothing.

What it would require is education and a near total re-imagining of how societies should be organized, work together, provide for their citizens, and for each other.

What we need is to put aside, to soem degree, individual difference and individual aims, and attempt to make life better for EVERYONE currently living, and for the next generation(s) to come. We should be leaving things BETTER than the way we found them.

We are, socially stagnant, and seem to have no Renaissance left in us. Where are the real philosophers, the ones to help inspire us to take a real look at our world, a real look at ourselves.

Many early Greek Philosophers were on the verge of breaking the shackles of god from the minds of people, to free there minds to be open, and to be the best possible citizens.

The inability to be skeptical in the precise and scientific meaning of the term. Thus religion is intolerant, race is intolerant, business is intolerant.

We need to use the scientific method to take our lives forward, how can all the religions of this awful world be right?

I think it´s basically FEAR.
Fear of the "other" who is different, that causes discrimination, hathred, aggression, killing, war
Fear of future insecurity, that leads to greed.
Fear of being less than others, (inteligence, wealth, creativity etc. ) that leads to envy, hathred, aggression, etc.
Fear even of being affraid, that drives to extreme and perhaps even stupid dangerous situations
