These pine trees are not growing in southern New England. What type of trees are they; does anyone know their name? They were found growing in the wild along Rt 95.

It's hard to be sure without seeing a picture, but they sound like spruce, which is common in northern areas. If you see them up close, the needles are much shorter than pine needles. Spruce trees grow tall and pointed at the top.

They sound like fir trees, maybe balsam fir. A famous Maine author (whose name escapes me) wrote a novel entitled "Country of the Pointed Firs." Sounds like the same tree, right? Tall and narrow? Dark green? It's definitely not a pine, poplar, or tamarack/hackmatack (also known as Larch). Nothing else fits your description.

Yep. I'm a Mainer.

Could it be a larch (other name tamarack) that you saw? What about hemlock? These are very common in Eastern Canada.
