The efficient use of energy is a wise goal. Hybrid vehicles are becoming more common as gas prices continue to climb. However, they are NOT the cause of high gas prices. The oil producing countries of the world have reached their peak production. This means that the supply of oil in the world can only decline from now onwards. As supply declines and demand increases, the price can only go up.

I don't think that is the case, but it is an unintended consequence of the rising costs.

I found it interesting last year that gas prices climbed until there was a marked change in car buying habits, with Hybrid sales increasing and large SUV sales taking a hit. It was almost as if the oil companies realized they had pushed too hard and backed off before the demand for oil was affected by the change in buying habits. By backing off, people went back to buying large SUVs, and this year the price increase have not been as rapid, so people have not noticed as much.

I would like to see more tax credits and other federal incentives to buy hybrids, as well as to develop and sell them.

I think the high gas prices are due to unrest in the Middle East caused by the meddling of foreign countries, like the US. Certainly, the gas prices before the war in Iraq were much more reasonable, I remember in 2002 I was paying $1.40 here in Massachusetts. I don't think it's a coincidence in any way that the gas prices went up when Bush sent the troops to invade Iraq. Oups, did I say "invade?" I meant to say, "liberate."

Yeah, I'm sure the oil companies are doing it so that we use LESS gas.

Gas prices are high because of the unrest in the Middle East. Because of the fighting, getting the oil out of the area has become more difficult. So to make up for it, they raise the price of a barrel of crude oil, used to make gasline. The oil companies pay the higher price and then make the average motorist pay more to make up for it.

THAT'S why gas prices are high. Nothing to do with hybrid cars.

Hybrid vehicles, at this point in time, actually consume more energy over all than other cars. They are not economical to buy yet, and are actually worse for the environment now. (The coal energy it takes to build the parts for the car outweigh the amount of gasoline cost for other cars).

I always thought of that being the primary idea of high gas price.

The oil industry knows that we are going towards more fuel efficient cars and so they need to prepare for their future losses.

Maybe it is because we are running out of oil?
