I've never had one before, so I'm probably not taking good care of it. It is in a glass right now in tap water, sitting in the sun. Should I be using distilled water, or some mix of water and fertilizer? I really don't know.

It seemed to thrive best when it was part of a small fishtank, but the fish are now all dead.

You need to change the water out periodically, and try bottled water (not distilled), your tap might have too many minerals or too much chlorine in it. Also, keep it in a sunny and warm place, but not in direct sunlight. Bamboo doesn't need fertilizer, but it does need fresh water (change it at least once every two weeks).

I have a bamboo plant and I find distilled water is best for it. Tap water contains too many chemicals.
