I think a wonderful gift would be a savings bond from the bank that she could use to help pay for college or buy her first car. Of course you could still get her a small toy to play with, but at this age if you give them a box and paper they are usually content.

My husband and I bought our daughter Sharayah a Dora the Explorer ATV.
Its about $80.00 at Wal-Mart(canada price)
Its a memorable first gift for a first birthday, and our daughter LOVES it!
She rides all over the yard.
Its for ages 1-3, I purchased a helmet and knee/elbow pads to go with it.

I think keep the gift simple. Young children need toys that allow the to use their imagination. Toys that require lots of batteries are often costly for parents and batteries don't get replaced. Board books (ones that have hard pages) are great, blocks, simple age appropriate puzzles, bath toys...Rule of thumb no toys with pieces that are small enough to fit inside a toilet paper tube.

A swimsuit! I saw this in a magazine years ago and LOVED it! A photographer took his wife's swimsuit and put it on his daughter and took a picture of her every birthday, starting with the first birthday. The succession of photos as she grew into the suit were so cool! I told my brother about this when his first child was born and he did it with his t-shirt on my nephew. It is really something fun and unusual.

For my youngest daughters first birthday, we bought her a pretty, upholstered rocking chair. I wanted to give her something that would last through her childhood and that she might be able to pass on to her own children someday. She turned 2 in June and sits in her chair everyday with her thumb in her mouth and lovey by her side looking at books, "watching" tv, or just observing the world around her. She's very territorial when her older siblings try to sit in it (really they're too big for it anyway). It's something special that she knows is just hers.

There are several things, and also it all depends how much you want to spend. Some good presents are:
1. Potty trainer.
2. Leap Frog - it's educational
3. Carpet - where the child can sit and play.

something for the parents, its not like the child is going to remember anyway. What I mean is perhaps some cute little outfits, a bonnet, or something practical. And never ever ever anything that makes nioses! :)
