We have three refridgerated units and three electric heaters on a very well insulated two bedroom house (one in the kitchen, one in the living room, and one between the two bedrooms) and when in the kitchen, we close off all doors and turn on that unit, when we leave we turn it off, same for when we are in the livingroom (where we spend the most time) and at night we close the door between the living room and the bedrooms, turn on the unit in the hall, and leave our bedroom doors open. My question is, are we causing ourselves to have a higher electric bill this way? Should we invest in central heat and air, which controls the temperature of whole house? The units we use are fairly new and claim to be electric-friendly, but I will admit that it is a little bit of a pain in the butt to keep turning units off and on. Initial comfort of entering a room that is too hot/cold is not a concern. Thanks in advance & have a great day.

If we are only going to be in a room for a few minutes, we don't bother to turn the unit on.

You are doing what is called Zone heating and cooling, that is a good way to save money but if you let the house get totally hot during the day, it takes more energy to cool it off but in the way you do it probably not much. As far as heat goes, I would get a wood burning stove, we have the same thing in our house and it is all electric and 2 BR. also and we don't use electricity to heat at all, the stove will pay for itself in electric savings and if you loose power you still have heat and you can cook on it also!

The most efficient way is to leave heat on in the winter at a steady temp. rather than to heat up a room at a time and when in use. A temp of 68 degrees is optimal for cost. As far as your window air conditioning units also work the best the same way. I have the same type house as you 2 bedroom ranch and we heat/cool our 1200 ft sq home at $65.00 a month on a budget plan. PRETTY cheap utilities~!
