Those little brown ones are usually sugar ants, and are primarily attracted to sweet things. Of course, what is sweet to them isn't always something we'd think of that way, but this is a good place to start.

Making certain that everything edible in your house is sealed well and not putting off scents for them is a beginning, and don't forget that syrup bottle in the cabinet. Clean helps too, of course, but I'm sure you've thought of that.

Those efforts will help you convince them not to come back, but won't necessarily get rid of them in the first place - they'll keep looking for a long time after there isn't anything left to attract them - it was a good hunting ground once, so they'll keep searching.

The best things I've found to get rid of them are those little round disks with holes in the side - I forget who makes them, probably Raid or someone. They are attracted to the sweet inside, but when they take their loot home and share it, it poisons the whole colony. It might take a week or more, but they will be gone after that.

Good Luck.

I had the same problem and tried different tactics. The best and most efficient way to remove them is use Raid Ant Killer. It's a small red bottle with a liquid inside. You put dabs of the liquid around your home and the ants will take some and bring it to the Queen. And once the Queen is killed, so is the colony.
The ants were gone from my home in less than a week.

Get rid of them the way naturally. I once did this and really works! Get a chicken or two near the ants, they will eat them all! When they have finished, clean the place because ants are where food is. Then feed the chickens to a cat.

Your best bet would be to call an exterminator. An ant can live up to 15 years and 3 days in water. If you have a colony the chances of getting rid of all of them yourself is very rare. Plus you would be protected from others coming in and living with you.

Mix equal parts of icing sugar and baking soda and put the mix onto a small saucer etc. and then place on the floor where you have seen the ants (usually in the corners)
The ants eat the mixture and because they have an exoskeleton i.e. on the outside of their body, they simply explode when the baking soda mixes with their body fluids.
This really works!

Believe it or not, Windex kills ants. After killing the visible ants in the house, spray a light mist around the area that they are coming in. You just have to remember to refresh the area after shampooing or washing. It really does work.

find out how/ where they are entering from and put down ant traps or spray them with Raid. Usually they enter from a small hole near a door or window. Once you've found it, patch the hole.
