Sometimes when I try to open certain files I get a small box displayed with just the word 'not signed', what is this, how do I correct it so I can download those files ?

This is risky so make sure that you are downloading from a trusted and secure site!!!
go to control panel click on internet options, click on the advanced tab, scroll down to the secruity sub list and uncheck the box in front of the line that says " check for signatures on downloaded programs". Click on apply and then on OK now exit out of the control panel.
this will fix the problem! But if you want to be safe from HACKERS make sure that you recheck that box before you go surfing the web!!!!

This may be because you may not have certain soft wares necessary to open those documents. for example :you need real one players to download certain songs. Likewise winzip, flashplayers, adobe readers etc, are needed for the appropriate documents you download.

your windows has got corrupted reinstalled windowsxp with servicepack 1 or 2 or 3....

Try right clicking and "save target as"

tryt right-click save target as--or link on firefox--that should resolve it im not 100% on not signed
