As soon as you can, research your employer's health plan and parental leave policy. You can do this by reading your contract or talking to someone in human resources, your company's personnel department or your union. Find out specifically what paid and unpaid leave you are eligible for. You might have some leave without pay that still includes benefits. Talk to other people who have taken family leave as well. They can give you information about your employer's policy -- both what it looks like in theory and in practice. If there are two employed parents, remember that dads are often eligible for family leave as well as moms.

I would imagine that if I was female I wouldn't tell a prospective employer that I was pregnant at the interview either. Not a lot of people are going to want to hire someone that they'll need a sub for in a few months anyways.

That being said, come on. Look the boss in the eye and tell her you're pregnant and when you're due. You're going to get your family leave time and such... its the law. There's no harm to you to be as straightforward as possible with the employer... they can get whatever temp replacement they need lined up, have people cross trained or whatever. If that doesn't happen... because you don't want to have a chat with your boss... that will no doubt be remembered too.

If you have a good relationship with your boss, then just tell her. I told my boss when I found out I was pregnant after 2 months. Best thing I did. This will also show professional courtesies that proves you are a person of whom you can trust and count on to be honest from the beginning. Also check into your benefits. By law they have to keep an opening for you but it does't have to be the position you have now. Good luck.

Are you afraid of loosing your job? Can the type of employment you do hurt you and your baby? The first trimester can be a difficult time so that is why I asked you these questions. If the type of employment you do is office work and someone in the office can cover you while you take maternity leave then tell her when you feel comfortable. If those around you have noticed I am sure she has too.

Your question will answer itself in another couple of weeks. If you tell her yourself, you control the time, place, and your boss's mood at the time of the exchange. If however, you're sure to be fired, keep it to yourself as long as possible and use the time to find a good lawyer to help you sue for unfair dismissal. Remember, you had no idea you were pregnant when you accepted the job. This is essential to your case.

Do accept my heartiest congratulations, in any case.

Absolutely tell her. If you work for a larger company, you are protected under federal law. It's always better to come forward and tell your boss these things rather than having her come to you first. You don't want to look like you're hiding something. Good luck and congratulations!

You don't have to tell her until 2 weeks before you want to leave work. So.. you want to leave at 36 weeks? Then you tell her at 34 weeks when you normally would have given her your lettter for 2 weeks notice.. If she asks you if you're pregnant or says anything.. say.. yep I'm pregnant.. and go about YOUR business.

Tell your boss. It is against the law for them to fire you b/c you are pregnant!!!!!!!!!!!! And if they have more than 15 employees they have to hold your job for you. I was honest with my boss an I got fired b/c they didn't want to hold my job. I currently have a lawsuit filed by the EEOC against that company. If you want to further research the laws go to EEOC.com

As far as office ettiquete goes, you probably should have told her around the time that you started your job, but more like it was a surprise to you. It would be good to tell her now, for the obvious reason, but also to bring up the idea of your maternity leave.
