Valium is the copyrighted name for Diazepam, a VERY powerful muscle relaxant. It can be prescribed for anxiety, irritable bowel syndrome, strong muscle cramps or spasms, and even panic attacks. It can be habit forming, and should not be taken for extended periods of time except under the direct supervision of a medical physician.
I was actually given a script for this when I went to see my dentist about some tooth/jaw pain. Turns out I was grinding my teeth during sleep as a result of job and life stress. The little pill helped me to stop doing that until the period of stress passed.
Avoid citrus when taking it, especially grapefruit, as it can cause the medications effects to heighten (last longer, become more powerful).
Last thing, NEVER take with a powerful narcotic painkiller (codeine, hydrocodone, etc.) since the two medications will enhance each other's effects and could result in death by accidental overdose.

to clear things up with you, DIAZEPAM(VALIUM), is not a powerful muscle relaxant as described by one of your kind respondents nor it treats muscle cramps. though these symptoms are true, they can all be blamed for anxiety which is the reason why people experience a lot of symptoms (hypochondriasis) from an unknown origin. therefore, it is correct to say that we treat anxiety to relieve its other symptoms such crampings etc...it's mind over matter, and its very powerful. don't treat yourself alone w/o any Md's recommendation. Valium can be addictive and can result to abuse and misuse, and can predispose you to other forms of addiction. try non-pharmaceutical remedies first before resorting to chemicals. attend a yoga class, enroll at a gym, do some swimming or engage with any kind of sports that interests you. if unsuccessful, you can always check out with your clinical psychologist or psychiatrist...good luck.

Anxiety as well as some other mental illnesses. Be careful though -- Valium is highly addictive and should not be used on a regular basis.

I know someone who gets a presciption for valium when they are going on a plane trip. (so I guess that would be for anxiety) She has gone to this dr for years so the dr has no problem whipping out the rx pad to write one up when she asks.

Sounds like you just want it to take as a "drug". Don't be a pill popper!
