I think it was the day when popular opinion decided that yes a tree falling when nobody would hear it would indeed make a noise and because it was undecided until this time no tree dared to make a noise when it fell so what was heard was the noise of all the millions of trees which fell without a sound before this point all relased as one giant bang.

I don't know what it was, but it wasn't Krakatoa. Krakatoa blew on August 27, 1883, killing approximately 36,000 people, in the same areas as the Christmas tsunamis. Also, for someone else who asked, Krakatoa was not east of Java, it was west of Java, in the Sunda Straight.

Big Bang theory (personally never have agreed with it) - it wasn't krakatoa, wrong date, but could have been another volcano or even an asteroid air burst somewhere.

Ah I knew that would come back to haunt the family,
well it goes like this, grandpappy Wesson was out in
the garden that afternoon trying out his new toy, a
rather large gun he had developed with young Smith,
unfortunatley not being very good at maths the powder
was a little stronger than expected and ......
............. Bang .............
They both ran off up into the mountains where they hid
in shame for many years living off pine cones and rabbit
droppings ( they dare not take a gun to shoot the rabbits
for obvious reasons ) ... ;-) ...

Ferndale like many of the towns of the Rhondda suffered through the dangerous nature of the mining industry, particularly in its early days. As well as numerous deaths through falls of rocks, dram accidents and other similar incidents it also suffered two major disasters in its early days. One in 1867 where 178 men and boys were killed, and one only two years later in 1869 when 53 miners lost their lives.
Maybe this? who knows

I'm sure I saw a TV programme that said an asteroid hit in Russia during that year. Try looking the date up on yahoo.

Smudge is wrong - the meteorite that hit Siberia (Tunguska) was in 1908.
