How would you like it if all of the world was under one Democratic Secular state in which the basic fundamental law was absolute freedom as long as it didn't infringe on anyone else's freedom? Imagine a world where you could travel freely, one currency, free trade, equal rights, free speech/expression for everyone, etc.

I've taken a look at the answers so far. What I see in most of the negative responses is a fear of apocolyse. Those answers make it sound like a united humanity is the worse thing that could possibly happen.

My question is why? Even if there is validity to a united world being a result of some harbinger of doom, it does not mean that coming together as a species is that doom itself. From my point of view, us not channeling our efforts into divisive activities is the greater good.

The only negative that made any sense was the one that says multiple nations serve as a check on the rest. The problem with that assessment is that it supposes a type of global feudalism, and history has shown that it is easier to ignore the squabble of two fiefdoms or the tyrrany with another if there is no vested interest in maintaining peace. That is, multiplicity actually works against serving as a check on others.

Ultimately, we as a species will have to realise that it would be a better system for us all if we put aside national sovereignty and embraced a global system where we could enjoy the fruits of a united front against the ails of society. The system of government proposed in the question is a very good one as the most successful nation-states in the world have embraced that within their own borders. The libertarian viewpoint is one that might require a bit of refinement, but it's a good place to start.

I often wonder about those who oppose having one world just how many worlds we should have. Two? Ten? A hundred? A thousand? I know of a case where thirteen sovereign governments realised that it was better to become one, and the United States has held up rather well, not because other empires kept us in check, but we as a people refused to yield our rights to self-government. I believe that if this holds true on this level, there's no reason that it shouldn't on a golbal scale.

To sum up, I look forward to a world as described in the question. I just hope that it comes about before nations rise up in a terrible war that beats mankind into a broken civilisation.

free trade guarantees infringement on freedom.
It's the Whole reason we go to war
the whole reason there are criminals to begin with
the whole reason why education in the US is a joke.

There will be no such government.
It will simply be a NATION of bureaucrats
lording over the nation of civilians. While the capitalists get 99% of the pie by the barrel of a gun. That's totally intolerable-- the epitome of slavery. No way.

Restricting and abolishing free trade will dramatically change the level of freedom an well-being people will have. And including such '3rd world' nations as the Eastern block, Latin America, Africa -- and extending human rights to them, where essentially they have NONE today, would be a human recognition that we are already a global society.

People who, by luck, end up born into a shantytown in Thailand who weed through the opened guts of exported obsolete electronics, unwittingly handling mercury and lead, trying to forage the copper that will buy them the US-subsidized grain they can no longer grow sustainably-- should be extended every affordance, every human right to education, safety, health, and opportunity that any boo-gee American gets by default.

Certainly this wont happen as long as free trade, and free global trade even moreso, PROFITS from the subjugation and real enslavement of the "peripheral' peoples around the world who are employed for less than 1/20th of the minimum wage in the US. As long as the myth that these oppresed peoples are responsible for their own suffering and sovereign problems-- the capitalist will gain, the world will remain nominally divided, and the politicans that could make a difference will be usurped by the influence of capital.

Bring it on baby! The bible tells us that this will eventually happen and before the world does end - this will happen. The world is totally moving in this direction right now. The euro is a fine example and so are the religious movements and groups that call themselves "ecumenical." One world religion and government with man in control - is where this is all headed. The only problem of course with a one world government (like any other dictatorship) - anyone who does not agree must be destroyed. Hitler tried to do this and was not successful because he's not the person who will bring this to be. I think Hitler was the little horn mentioned in Revelation. But there is a big horn to come. Hitler was like John the Baptist before Jesus. He did alot toward the goal but was not the "called" to bring the full thing to pass. We have to have one world religious and political leader before this will happen. He wil amaze people, perform miracles and be someone unlike the world has seen before. He will even claim to have risen from the dead. He will be charismatic and able to draw people to himself. He will appear to be as it were an angel of light - bringing peace and prosperity to all the world. But the reality will be quite the opposite.

Is people ready for it? Any government creates life for its citizens based on restrictions and conditions. It is the same principle which operates prisons...Humanity does not know any other way. One World Government will do the same and it has nothing to do with meanings of freedom and liberties, for this faculties is not really known, only defined. So one global prison is not really good perspective. There is a prison camps in Siberia which does not have external walls and securities on a perimeter. Please, you can go as you wish...500 miles in radius there is a forest called "taiga" with all "benefits' of a climate, wild animals and , perhaps, more than that. There is tough people carrying sentences there even they do not take a chance...But at least they can go...With one world prison there is no even an opportunity to go...where???? Only to take last chance and try live peacfully in "taiga"

every person who does not have confidence there's a push for a one international government is a entire nimrod. All you need to do is look on the Copenhagen convention on "international warming," the place they plan on an settlement for "international governance." It did no longer ensue with the aid of fact they have been found out via the widespread public. yet they are going to objective back quickly in yet another convention already scheduled, I ignore the place. And a one international government isn't good for humanity with the aid of fact human beings like me, an American, will lose our God-given rights and we can all be serving a small team of unelected Elitists. NO thank you.

I think I would feel very badly.

With one government, you would have to have an efficient practical way to track everyone and the one way that I can see would be to electronically tag everyone. That, as almost everyone knows, will be a major tool of the antichrist.

Then, you would have to a consistent reliable way to enforce your laws. That would require an army of unimaginable proportions to observe, take into custody, judge, imprison, and carry out sentencing. Again, that is predicted to come into effect with the anitchrist.

So, as I am a Christian, again, I would not feel good about a one world government.

The only thing that keeps governments sort of in check is other governments. If there was a single one world government, it would rapidly become a tyranical police state enslaving all of humanity. Even with multiple governments, it's almost that bad.

An appalling idea.

I prefer to live in a state of xenophobia preserved by strict territorial agreements. Apart from anything else, every country apart from my own is populated by damned foreigners, and a lot of them don't even speak the same language as I do.

Primitives!

Oh, that is so scary that you mentioned that. That makes me think of the time in the future when the Antichrist will reign on this earth for 7 years. Don't scare me like that!

i think that would be great as long as people were able to keep their cultures and were happy.

but there is the idea that the person who does this will be the antichrist.

for christians its a win win situation. peace-goood. antichrist-goood. since that AC ushers in the return of the real C.
