History is there for us to learn from it. History shows us the past mistakes of makind, its achievements, and why things are how they are.
The problem is, we are not an species with willingness to learn. We have burned our astronomers for pointing out that we are not the center of the universe, we have nailed on crosses our preachers for telling us that "we are all equal to the eyes of God", we have guillotined and betrayed our own revolutions when the new groups in power thought that changes were going "too far", and we are still willing to block medical reports that tell us that marijuana is actually safer than tobacco (just like the WHO did six years ago), ignore the fact that recent economic "recipes" are creating more poverty, not reducing it, or even willing to deny evolution and claim that "god plants false evidence" just so that some people can continue to have a justification for their power in society.
We are not an species willing to learn. Learning implies a change of worldview, of paradigm. And that change often implies that those who are in power unfairly will lose their power.
That's why, as long as we live in unfair political and economic systems that base themselves on fallacies and inequality, truth will continue to be blocked. Some men do not want the truth to be heard, the historians yelling that mistakes will be repeated are silenced, while the historians that agree with the official line are placed on pedestals. History, like many other social sciences, is influenced and distorted by who's in political or economic charge of society.
False history is created to encourage support to political issues and structures, while the true history is often silenced and buried when it's not convenient to those in power... (ie: The US financed and supported Hussein in the 1980's when he was gassing kurds)
History does not repeat itself, it continues. It's not divided in cycles, but it's a long line of unjustices and occasional advances.

It gives us some ideas about what to expect; we can make assumptions based upon what happened in the past and hopefully not make the same mistakes twice. Also, if we know where we are coming from, we may be able to see where we are heading. Life is circular, not linear as some think, and we are all are interconnected in the big picture. Most importantly, we've learned that nothing is new, its already been done before, just maybe a bit differently. So PLAY NICE in the sandbox.

Well it only effects modern society when individuals in society become educated. so it is up to our education system as to how history affects society. Anyway in order to understand such things as this wow you could write an amazing book on this subject. I could go on and on i guess. Well in our current situation it seems we havent learned very much. we need a new revolution. I like your questions alot it would be nice to actually have some sort of dialouge with you.

history helps modern society by giving us a view on what not to do. we study previous society so that we will learn from their mistakes. man does not need to make the same mistake twice to destroy a dynasty. history has guided modern society, and most of our modern knwoledge cam from the study of history.

History is something we should learn from. However, the world has not learned at all. Everything seems to go in big circles and never stops.

Not too much. We make the same mistakes over and over again. As our population continues to expand, we are less and less able to realize where we came from, and where we are going. Most people hurl through space with no plan and no goal, and with no sense of history.

War is becoming less and less attractive as a solution to problems as the internet allows us to see more of the waste of creativity.
