8.3% of inmates in state run facilities are seeing impaired. Inmates, while not enjoying freedom, obviously, are protected by other constitutional rights and priviliges. Most recently those outlined by the ADA (Americans with Disabilites Act).
In short..there are blind, sight impaired..deaf and hearing impaired inmates scattered throughout the federal, state, county and municipal systems.

As a side bar..prison systems are also one of the major producers of braille based books, teaching instruments, etc. as are they also being used for training seeing eye dogs and horses.

Being blind is not a get out of jail free card. If a blind person is convicted of a crime, he faces jail just like anyone else. Special accomodations? Yeh, they get special bars, locks and a cot, just like every other special criminal! Actually, due to their being blind, they probably have a better chance to be in a minimum security prison, but let's face it, minimum or maximum, prison is prison!

The only blind person I know of who went to jail was Ray Charles, for possession of heroin. But he got pardoned so he could go to rehab. I'm sure they would make accomodations; I don't think a blind person would be able to function in a regular jail or prison.

I would think that they get house arrest or something similar. Being that a blind person cannot get around without some degree of assistance, its not much he going to be be able to do in order to be much of a threat to anyone.

No, I have never seen one in jail, but I can imagine that people who are blind who get arrested, and confined, can accomodate themselves more than you think. They are blind in fact, yes, but they have learned to live with it. I don't think they need any special guard to watch over them, they can take care of themselves just fine.

well, I can't see a blind person commenting a crime because they can't see and if the did i think the police would file it as an accident.
