Firefox is a standards compliant browser, which sticks to the rules when displaying content. IE has its own quirky stylesheet engine and generally screws up the look of a website unless you specifically hack the stylesheet.

Firefox uses Tabs instead of a new window for every new web page.

Firefox includes hundreds of useful extensions to the browser, both for developers and regular internet users.

Search to several different engines is conveniently built into Firefox.

Firefox allows for unlimited customisation and expansion of features tailored to you.

Firefox is an Open Source Web browser, Internet Explorer is produced by Microsoft.

People are using Firefox because it has a better range of features than Internet Explorer and is a little faster to render pages. Although it does have some problems with some sites.

There are a variety of differences between the two browsers. Most noticeably, Firefox supports tabbed browsing. This means you do not have to clog up the taskbar with many windows open at once. One open window can have many different tabs. This is both faster and more convenient than opening up multiple windows. Tabbed browsing is so popular with users that most other browsers (such as Opera) also have it and IE7 is including it as well.

As for what else is different, what can I say? They are different browsers with different architectures. Firefox is open source and is being developed by developers all over the world. IE is Microsoft's and they are only using their own developers. Because of its open source nature, Firefox code is checked by many developers all over the world with different backgrounds so it is often very safe. Also, this open source nature lends itself to innovative features that IE currently does not have, such as Find as you type. Also, Firefox's architecture allows it to easily support extensions and themes that users can create themselves. IE has only one real skin and not many extensions.

IE does support ActiveX, though. This is a security risk because ActiveX scripts may be able to access your computer properties and your files as well as install spyware. Firefox does not support ActiveX so you are safe.

However, one noticeable difference (besides tabbed browsing), is that Firefox is built to support web standards, especially that of CSS. If you are a web developer and browse sites, you will find many detailing CSS bugs in IE. These are now being fixed in IE7 but web developers and many end users favor Firefox because it is available now.

Most viruses and worms are targeted at I.E. because the code is broken. Microsoft's new I.E. 7.0 addresses most of these problems but not all! They still have problems with the S.S.L.. Firefox is not so widely targeted because it is open source! same as mozilla.
