When does it knock? Also from what part of the car? Any knock becomes dangerous the longer you ignore it. If its going over a bump it could be a shock or shock mount. If those are bad you lose some control over the car. And since you say it happens with more people in the car I would guess it is something in the suspension. The extra weight changes how the car rides and puts load on different places. Have it looked at. If you wait to long and something brakes as you are driving it could get very expensive.

If it's an engine knock, or a sound from the engine, yes it is serious. If it's a noise from the rear or undercarriage that is noticable due to having more people in the car, shouldn't be a difficult fix. Best to take it in to a reputable repairman for an estimate, or diagnosis. good luck.

and I guess it knocks over bumps in the road? I would say that the exhaust has come loose,easty job to fix

It's possible that your exhaust is hitting once there is enough weight in the car. Take it to the exhaust shop. They will be able to tell you if it's too close.
