I used sweet potatoes, white potato, green beans, chicken, lamb, ham, pumpkin, all of them puree. For desert bananas, apricots and apples. While I was doing my own babyfood i find this websites very useful. Take a look you will like them:

I always start them on rice baby cereal mixed with formula. But both of mine just loved those mashed bananas as soon as they were ready. Now my son is addicted to bananas, he eats 2-3 per day and he doesn't get constipated at all! Sometimes, he'll cry after eating lunch or supper because he wants those bananas!

When my sons started eating food other than formula, I started them with the different baby cereals (rice, barley, oatmeal, etc.), then stage 1 vegetables and fruits, then stage 2 foods (meats, vegetables and fruits) (all jarred). Once they had enough teeth to chew, I'd give them whatever it was we were having.

I started cereal at 4 months-He wont eat the kind you mix up from the box, only the jar kind.
5 months-vegetables, he hates carrots and sweet potatoes
6 months-meats, such as chicken with apples, he pretty much likes all kinds.
I only give him baby food. I havent tried to mix up stuff on my own yet. Im afraid it will mess up his stomach. He also loves the sweet kind such as vanilla cuustard and fruits. Good Luck!!

I find it hard to believe that a country as advanced as japan wouldnt have a baby food section in the grocery stores and markets. Just buy whatever soft foods are recommended there.

We started around 6 months with each of our children.
My son started with rice cereal mixed with breastmilk and then had bananas, applesauce and sweet potatoes.
My daughters both started with bananas and avocados.
