Can't help you... not enough information. Who makes the fan? Find out and go to their web site and look for info. on your fan.

First answerer is correct. The rotary or canopy switch (as they are sometimes called), is bad. Just make sure when you go to the hardware store to get a new switch that you tell them it's for a ceiling fan. Some of them are slightly different from a regular canopy, rotary switch.

Rotary Switch gone.
Very common and an easy fix.
Retailers stock them and they sell for about $4 or $5.
They usually have a brochure telling you how to install.
Just remember to cut power off in that circuit.

Sounds like an old fan, may be time to upgrade.
