After 7 years any outstanding debts that have had no action taken on them will disappear from your credit file.
You can settle outstanding debts usually for a fraction of their value by contacting creditors and asking them to settle for 20% of the debt or so.
Once debts are settled you can ask the creditor to notify the credit reference agencies that they are settled.
If you dispute any negative references on your file you can write and have a file note added explaining why you dispute the debt.
Paying bills on time and managing credit well from now will also improve your credit references.
But... there is no such thing as a credit rating, every lender uses a different scoring process and things like being married, living in a house for more than 3 years, being on the electoral roll can all affect your ability to get credit.

Depends how long ago it was. After six years any defaults / CCJs etc disappear from your credit file automatically. Get your latest file from Experian / Equifax to see how it's looking now
