You know how your phone may go in and out of service, especially in rural areas. What happens if you send a text to someone while their phone is out of the service area? Do they get in when they come back in service or does it just go away?

I want to add that the phone is out of service for a significant amount of time...not just a couple of minutes.

When you send a message to a mobile it is first transferred from your service providerto the recipients service provider and then it is stored there for a temporary storage normally for upto a week. then it starts searching for the recepient, if the recipient is in the coverage the same is delivered otherwise it is stored, for the maximum time limit as applicable for the service provider. after the time limit is over it is discarded. So you can understand that your message do not reach the recipient in the real time but after following these steps.

If theyre phone is out of a serive area and this is the message you rcvd when you try to send it to them, then they didnt get it.

Its more your phone then theyres. Theyre phone acts as a reciever and dependant on whatever plan they have, they either can or cant accept messages in a certain area. Personally i have recieved messages while out of an area, they just popped up later once i was in.

SMS text messages are handled through a "store and forward" mechanism. If the network is unable to deliver the message, it will hang on to it, and deliver it when the recipient reconnects to the network.
