got something stuck in the belts or motor, take it apart carefully and clean it out then put it back together if it still does it then its time for a new one

Sounds like the fan belt is broken and you need to just go get another vacuum. Without the fan, the motor heats up too hot and can cause a fire.

Sounds like the belt is binding against the motor. Just take it apart as best you can, with it unplugged of course, and replace the belt and also clean out any hair and other junk that is most likely in there.

I WAS going to say to get a new roller belt, but if the motor is "lit up", I'd get rid of the puppie. Something is cooked, and it's dangerous.

check teh belt, sounds like it is bound up somehow and burning. OR the motor needs a good cleaning out.

Your belt is sticking. It will soon break. It is rubbing, and that burninig of the belt is what you are smelling. Replace the belt and oil the pulley mechanism.
