The processors recommended by my grad school program are Pentium, Celeron and AMD Athlon. What about Turion or Centrino? Any input would be greatly appreciated

p4/centrino is in fact the best

celeron processors are defective p4 processors that can still function at a certain capacity. that's why they're so cheap. kind of like slightly irregular clothing.

amd isn't bad, but their life expectancy isn't as long as a pentium.

I'd go for one that works :)
Basically however, your school is recommending a laptop with a CPU, since they list all the processors that are available for the mainstream laptops.
What brand or type you should get, depends on a couple of things, like your budget and what you plan to do with that laptop.
If you only read e-mails and browse the internet, write an occassional letter, you don't need the fastest or biggest of them all, an Intel Celeron or AMDs Centrino will usually suffice.
If you're into gaming, AMDs Turion would probably be the way to go. If you're gonna be developing, writing websites and runnning all sorts of heavy stuff on your laptop, both Intels Pentium 4 and AMDs Turion would be the way to go.

If you're not in a rush and have the cash: Intel just released a new processor that has had some very positive feedback from various websites: the Core 2 Duo.

Last tip: Don't save on RAM! Particularly not if you're gonna be using WindowsXP. 1 Gb might seem overkill, but it usually isn't.

turin - don't touch by a yard-stick
> l2 cache of 512 mb is pathetic

i believe the intel pentium m (mobile) r termed centrino
....lottsa jargon

now they simply call them intel
duo-core and solo core

duo core as if 2 processors built in 1 for multitasking !

the celeron is the poor man's pentium

lemme illustrate by giving u a good basic notebook
- good enuf 4 grad school

the Dell Inspirion B130
http://www.dell.com/content/products/features.aspx/featured_basnb?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs
at $ 552
Intel® Pentium® M Processor 735 (1.70GHz/2MB Cache/400MHz FSB)
Genuine Windows® XP Home Edition
512MB DDR2 SDRAM 1 Dimm
40GB 5400rpm Hard Drive
24X CD Burner/DVD Combo Drive
Intel® PRO 2200 Internal Wireless (802.11 b/g, 54Mbps)
1Yr Ltd Warranty, 1Yr Mail-In Service, and 1Yr HW Warranty Support

you can also get the same Dell Inspirion B130
at $ 449 , but with a celeron processor & 256 mb ram
Intel® Celeron® M Processor 380 (1.60 GHz/400MHz FSB/1M L2 Cache)
256MB DDR2 SDRAM 1 Dimm

the celeron is good enough 4 basic and office work, not more
the pentium is much more capable and can do a lot more than a celeron

notice l2 cache in celeron is 1 mb & in pentium is 2 mb
this is a HUGE difference !!

i'll definitely ask u 2 go in for the pentium model @ $ 552
> money's worth !
(& not get cramped in the celeron)

>>> not 2 forget the duo core's,
the Dell Inspirion E1405 & E1505
http://www.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/entnb_e1505?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&~ck=mn
- sure better

simple ... the more the money u can put in the sweeter it gets...

u decide, i gave u my frank opinion, the inspirion b130 with pentium should see u throgh ... more than comfortably
.... more would only be luxurious !!!

Pentium (4 or centrino) I've long since stopped using AMD processors, as they tend to overheat frequently.

Stay away from celeron. Celeron is basically Pentium's entry level processor.. and just doesn't work well.

about the determination, the major rationalization for one is sturdiness (through the undeniable fact that is a company pc designed for reliability and sturdiness), even if it can also provide different company effective factors like a matte reveal and docking station. Latitudes are equipped more durable than different Dells (and is the reason their heavily larger fee) and the better ones (more recent E5420/E5520 and the E6xxx line) have a magnesium alloy casing. once you're out on the line plenty or abuse your pc, it is notably major. in the different case, you could purchase a plastic Inspiron with same specs for heavily more less expensive, even if it gained't very last everywhere close to as lengthy. in case you could push the specs, bypass for a spread E5520. The E5510 remains sturdier than the different ones, even if it wouldn't have magnesium alloy. What you're doing would not require that sturdy of a portraits card. An integrated one is superb except you do heavy 3-d gaming or CAD modeling. I have a spread E6410 with suggestions from the way and it is an striking and robust pc.
